Esty Filled, New Offer . . .

I have gotten a couple of inquires about my Etsy Session. Sorry guys, but it is already filled and done - here is one from the session I did the following morning. Darling little girl : ) I was having trouble sleeping the night before and posted the Esty thing at like 3:00 in the morning and by noon that next day I was already photographing this little girl - that's how fast it went. I don't know when I'll have the need for one again (it might be months out) so it really is like a lottery, super random.
But, I do have one other silly, fun, random proposal . . .
I have decided that I want to jump on the bandwagon and try out some eyelash extensions. I thought I'd check and see if anyone knew someone who would be up for trading services. It could be for a newborn, child or family session (which I usually never do, just because I like my babies best). You can use the session for yourself or gift it to someone. Shoot me an email or text if anyone is interested :) So there it is. I can't decide how silly I feel posting this, but thought it was worth a shot : )

Yay, I am really on a roll with these post :) It is a sign that the baby is coming - gatta get these done so I can be stress-free.
So, this session makes me so happy :) Phoebe's mom brought her in to get pictures of her in her sealing dress. What a happy day that must have been. She was super smiley for us, we had a great time doing these. Love. Her.

Introducing Etsy Sessions

From time to time, I am contacted by an Etsy seller to photograph some of their products (usually headbands). It is fun for me to do a little exchange, but I do not always have a baby girl lined up right away. I want to have a good turn around time for these gals, so I have decided to offer Esty Sessions. It will be available on a need-basis only (I'll only announce any openings on my blog so keep watching : ). It will be free of charge, but I will only give you 3 of the pictures I take (depending on the need, I may take many more than that during the session). If you would like me to take more and get more of the pictures I will offer half off for the session (signature or mini). I hope that makes sense. Email or call me if you need me to explain it better.
So, here is my first announcement! Available - one Esty Session. I need a baby girl less than two weeks old between now and the end of January. Let me know if anyone wants to grab this great offer : )

This little darling was perfect for the session. He hardly fussed and proved again the benefit of taking pictures like these within the first week of life. His mom had a cute idea for a late Christmas card that gave me a chance to bring out my oversized teacup (haven't used that in so long). It turned out darling : ) Speaking of momma, could anyone be more beautiful? Gorgeous.

All I can think of is what a trooper Danielle's mommy is. She brought her sweet little girl in 4 days after having a c-section. Amazing. With the holidays it was the only day that was going to work. And I think it was worth it - what a darling little girl! Hope you love them Meredith : )

When Halle's mother told me she was having a girl, I was so excited for her - I knew she would be adored to no end. What a sweet little girl. She was a few days older than I usually photography newborns, and boy, do those few days make a difference. But we were able to get her to sleep and got some beautiful pictures of her. I haven't been the best blogger, but will try to do better. Here is darling Maya. She came a bit early and because of being in the hospital, she wasn't able to come in until she was 2 months old. She fussed a bit, but then feel asleep in my arms. Babies make me feel so happy when they fall asleep for me then let me pose them in cute positions. Makes my day. I love cuddling my babies (can I call them mine?) : )

This beautiful mother brought her darling daughter in after her girlfriends gave her a gift certificate. What a perfect gift - I know I would have been ecstatic to have such a gift for my little ones.

What an absolute sweetheart little Mason was. While holding him, I asked his mom if I could keep him : ) I mean, just look at him :) Well, it looks like I don't have to convince his mommy since I will be having my own little boy in just a few months. Yep, I found out last week that it is only one baby and it's a boy - my 4th! So, maybe little Mason was sent to prepare me for loving yet another little boy.
I also did pictures of his older sister Madison when she was newborn - it always makes me happy when clients return to me with their new additions. Kara, I hope you have more 'cause you sure have cute little ones :)

I love the pose and shot of the first picture posted. I am determined to have the same one for my baby when that time comes. The wooden box is a box my grandpa made years ago. He hung it in a tree near the area where they did outdoor cooking. Seeing it reminds me of summers spent with my grandparents and makes me smile.

Meet sweethearts, Tate and Lucy. Yay, I am finally getting these posted. Mom's had them back for a week - hope they are enjoying them as much as I enjoyed editing them.
I'll have to apologize for my slacker-ness. I have a great excuse though : ) Come February I'll be having baby number 5! I am so happy and grateful, even though morning sickness has really made me miserable the past couple months.
I thought I'd share it in this post because a couple of weeks ago I had two dreams that I'm having twins - now I really don't think I am, but it does make me wonder knowing that my oldest has been praying faithfully the past 6 months for two baby girls. Like I said, I doubt it, but we'll see what I am having in a few more weeks : ) Whatever the gender, we are happy to be adding to our family : )

The first picture of beautiful baby Ben is one of my all time favorites. I finally got around to doing some prints for my studio and hung it as one of them.
Ben's mom commented at the end of the session that she was glad she made the effort to come in for pictures at such a young age. We talked about how hard it is to get out and about when you have just had a baby. I completely empathize - after 4 of my own. But looking at these pictures - wouldn't you agree it was completely worth it? No regrets there :)

One of my favorite things is to see new parents and how they adore their new little ones. This family was no exception. Little Samantha has the ability to steal your heart in a matter of no time. These three handsome boys are my nephews. Both my sister and I had three boys in a row. I really hope she gets a girl next as well. It is so fun to have a girl round out the boys and bring a different flavor to the family. We don't get to see these guys too often (they live out of the state), so it's a real treat when they come to visit. why choose me?

So, I learned this past week about a business just north of me that is becoming quite popular as an option for doing photos of newborns, children, families, etc. They give the CD the same day, let you include whomever you'd like and give you a certain amount of time all for well under a hundred dollars. I can see how people think it is a really good deal.
Now, it is not news that there is a ton of competition out there when it comes to hiring a photographer. Anyone who buys a decent camera can start a business. The area is super saturated.
So, I thought it wouldn't be too crazy for me to just post something about what people should look for and why I think people should choose me - particularly when doing a newborn session.
The main reason I keep a blog is so that people can see my work, the progress I am making in creating beautiful pictures and see what they can expect when they do a session with me. I hope when people visit my blog, they see something beautiful - something they wish they could have for their own children.
So my first tip - look at the results of what a photographer has created and decide if that is what you want for yourself. Remember that blogs and portfolios are the photographers best foot forward. If you are not wow-ed by them, you might end up disappointed with what you end up getting when you do a session of your own.
Next, remember a session is not just getting pictures, but it is an experience. I am very limited in the sessions I take partly because I want to cater to my clients needs. I bend over backward to book my newborns for the time that is best for them - I know it will create a better result. And though I have a time listed as far as how the session will go - I always make sure I feel like I've gotten what I want even it if means extending the time. Newborns need time to be fed, rocked, cuddled and put to sleep and a 45 minute window is not going to get you those precious pictures that you'll treasure.
I think I have made it apparent in previous posts that newborn photography is what I love and want my niche to be.
So why choose me? Because I do everything I can to create what I as a mother (who is so smitten by motherhood that I have 4 children 6 and under and still want another) would want. I think motherhood is one of the most beautiful things in the whole world and I hope my work reflects that belief. I hope that people will see through my posts that I have an absolute love for photographing newborns and I am so honored by those that trust me with that precious time frame that is absolutely irreplaceable.

This was my first newborn mini-session and I think it was a great success :) The only hard part was trying to cut down the number of pictures I edited. It is so hard when I love the shots we get - so what can I do but add them in too? Beautiful mother of this handsome, handsome boy. Ooooo . . . I love the fact that I get to cuddle these newborn babies during the session as I rock them to sleep. So precious.

What a precious little girl. Layla fought sleep quite a bit, but I think the session turned out great. I really enjoyed getting to know this sweet family as we did pictures of their darling girl. My favorite was hearing Dad tell his wife how beautiful she looked (every new mother needs to hear that!) as I did mommy/baby poses. What a beautiful family all around :)

I was so excited to get the printed cards of my little girl's birthday invitation in the mail this week. I go through a great company that does beautiful work. My favorite is a pearl finish that gives that card a beautiful shimmer. It adds such a soft, pretty touch to these cards (sadly not visible in these pics, so you'll just have to take my word on it).
Doing these cards have inspired my to start offering birth announcement cards soon. I need to get moving on doing some design work. So, to get me motivated I'll do a mini giveaway to my blog readers/followers. Ready?

Someday, very soon, I am going to invest in a blog and get past blogspot. The uploads kill me - these pictures are so much more gorgeous in true file. Maybe this year I'll get to that . . .
Anyway, this session was so fun. I can't decide who I liked the most - Goldie (who is an absolute sweetheart), her mom or her aunt who was visiting from out of town. I loved the darling outfits Goldie's mom brought for her to wear. With that kind of tutoring, this little girl is bound to have a great sense of style! Goldie is going to be a big sister any day now and I hope I get to meet her :)

This past summer my family had our annual family reunion at my grandparents summer home. While we were there, I found some old wood that was beautifully weathered and old. I asked my mom if it would be okay if I took it for my studio. Last week, I finally got to use it - it was so exciting. I made sure that the first shoot I did was with my little one - their great granddaughter. My grandparents never knew my children and so this was extra sweet for me. In honor of the occasion, I dressed my daughter in a Navajo outfit I made for her. I will treasure these pictures always. It is a part of me in the generations before and after.

I feel like I've said it a hundred times already - but I adore newborn photography. I think it is such an amazing time of life that is so fleeting. It reminds me of a rainbow or a beautiful sunset. It only lasts a short time, but that memory is there in your mind and heart. And I think that every mother should have the opportunity to have that moment captured through the art of photography.
So, let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, years ago when I first was introduced to the amazing world of newborn photography, I was having a baby. And I found this amazing photographer, whom I admired so much. I wanted so, so badly to have her photograph my child, but the cost of the session was well beyond our family means. It broke my heart.
From the time I started my photography business I have always struggled with the balance of keeping my prices low enough for the typical family to come to me and making the work I do worth it (in terms of being away from my children). It has been hard. I have increased my prices a few times - knowing that the quality of my work was improving.
So, what about that family that really wants my work coupled with their newest love - their newborn child?
For my child sessions I offer mini sessions, but always thought it would never work for newborns. You cannot not force a session and much of the time is given to feeding a soothing.
The other day the idea came to my mind of how I could make it work. So, I want to experiment . . .

Introducing, Newborn Mini Sessions.
Here's the comparison to help you understand the difference.

$250 - Signature Newborn Session:
• up to a 2-hour session
• approx 25-40 edited shots edited and perfected.
4-5 setups with multiple shots of each set up.

$150 - Mini Newborn Session:
45min - 2 hour session (just depending how soon we get the shots we need)
10 edited and perfected shots
2 setups (one of baby alone and one with mom and/or dad)
note: *** only babies 7 days and younger eligible for mini sessions

The moment I first saw this darling little girl, I knew her mother must have fallen in love with her at first sight. I surely did - what a sweetheart. She was just barely 6 pounds when she came in and I loved holding her. She preformed like a perfect little model. I had fun trying on some new headbands I got in the mail from an etsy seller. (Here's her store if you see anything you are interested in). Ashley did so well I finally pulled out this antique stroller I found a few months ago. Isn't it darling? I honestly enjoyed every minute of this photoshoot : )

I am quite biased - these two handsome boys are my nephews. Little 18-month old Kaipo loves his mommy so much it was hard to get him to do some pictures, but I think they turned out just fine. And I love the one with his drop-dead-gorgeous-mother, my sister. Enjoy Jess! Love you!

This year I decided to offer mini-sessions. I am excited to do this. I think my clients will like the extra option and I can do a quick photoshoot without having to get a babysitter (I'll schedule them during nap time :) I have to say I am going to be pretty strict with the time of 30 minutes and the 15 edited shots. Otherwise, why do a signature session, right?
I am excited for this new year and all I will learn and improve upon : )

Sweet little Caleb has been hoped-for for so long. He is the boy following 4 girls (His brother - the oldest of the family must be so excited!). What a sweetheart at only 3-days old. His mother is amazing and has inspired me. Anyone know someone expecting their 6th child? If so - let them know I'll give them half-off a newborn session. It's the least she should have : )

This little girl was absolutely perfect in every way. We had such a great session and she cooperated so well! She is going to be an angel child for her mother for sure :) I love the shots she got and hope mom loves them too. I can't get enough of the beautiful look of the light backdrop and skin pictures. Gorgeous. So count this as fair warning that I will ask for it for every newborn session from now on :)

Here are two darling kids from one of my mini sessions. So, can I just share my most embarrassing moments in my business so far? I went ahead and booked this cute family for the day before Thanksgiving. Between having family in town staying with us and the distraction of that "blizzard" (that never showed up), I totally forgot about their session. I had rolled out of bed 30 min before they showed up and was still in my pjs when they knocked on the door. I was mortified. Mainly because it was so terribly unprofessional. Sorry about that Annie! If you ever decide to come back to me, I promise it won't happen again. Your kiddos are darling by the way. Oh, I already said that. Well, they are :)

I don't know if I have ever really mentioned on my blog that I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. But understanding that - this is the granddaughter of the man who baptized my step-father over 30 years ago. One of those fun connections made through Facebook.
Lucy was darling with the most beautiful eyes and light hair. I hope that she and my daughter Ka'imi will be friends someday : )

It is no secret that the area I serve is super saturated with photographers. So, I think that many things should be considered when choosing a photographer. On my website, I have an about me tab for potential clients. I think that having a photoshoot is not just an end result of a beautiful picture, but an experience as well. That is why I have this section for people to get to know me well before they bring their little ones in. I want them to know why I do what I do. I want them to know that when I gush over their children, it is out of genuine love of children. I hope that might set me a part a bit.

This picture about is what I decided to add as my self portrait. Though that baby in my tummy is almost 9 months old now, I like using that shot so people can not only read about, but also see the love have for motherhood.

So why this post now? Well Go{4}Pro is having a self portrait contest, so I thought I'd enter. It is also a great chance to share some thoughts of why I think people should choose me to do pictures for them :)

I love this cute family. I have done pictures for them a few times and I can't tell you how it flatters me that their mom keeps coming back to me. Jack is as cute as can be - he loved the antique cars I had in my studio. It was cute to see him line them up to play.
Halle was a doll - though she did not really dig the tulle overlay on her dress. It's fun to see how much she's grown since the first time I did pictures for her.

One of my dear friends, Jodi, of A Yummy Life Photography, did our family pictures this year. I was so happy we did them with her. She does amazing work with families, kids and seniors. Isn't her studio name so fun. It matches her style and personality so well. She has a gorgeous studio in Salt Lake, but also does outside shots. Some of my favorites are her urban sessions.
I happily pass the baton of doing family pictures to other photographers. If you want a recommendation, I highly, highly recommend Jodi!

PS. Aren't my kids so cute? I love them to bits : ) And my husband is truly my everything : )

Forgive me of posting another pic of sweet little Mateo. I was going through pictures and had to edit this one. It makes me so happy, I just had to add it to this post.

(Here is where I give fair warning that I am going to be very vulnerable and share a part of me. I hope you will indulge me.)

Going back to the picture - It actually is quite appropriate to add Mateo to my post because it was during his session that I realized how much I truly love photography and especially newborn photography (not like I didn't know that already, but . . .)

So, today, November 13th, is the anniversary of when I lost my arm in a car accident 14 years ago. It has affected my life in many ways, as anyone can imagine. One of the more frustrating ways is in my photography. You see, part of the art of newborn photography is posing babies. A beautiful newborn picture looks effortless, natural, and peaceful. As anyone who has ever done a newborn session knows (client or photographer), it is a good amount of work and talent to get some of these sleeping baby poses. Now imagine doing it with one hand! (I am so thankful for sweet parents who help me during the sessions).

So, during Mateo's session, I was struggling a bit and I honestly told myself, Michele, you need to quit. You cannot do this with one hand.

But. When I got to my computer and started editing I knew I could not. I cannot describe the joy and satisfaction I get in capturing a newborn baby. There is something inside me that is almost giddy at the sweetness of a posed baby with their tiny little fingers and toes. I love it. And so I have decided that along with being a wife and mother, this was what I was meant to do. So, that means I just have to figure it out somehow and keep trying . . .

I have a couple session yet to post, but wanted to share these pictures I took of my darling daughter. I actually have a hard time doing prints of my own kids. I think it's because I expect perfection and am always waiting for a better shot. I did these in just a few minutes (she was sick that day and not in the mood for pictures), but I was so happy with what I got. In fact, I'd put these on canvas in a heartbeat.

Sweet Abby was so fun to photograph. Though she was as active as any other year-old baby, we got some darling pictures of her. I loved all the darling outfits her mother brought. I seriously need to go find that polka-dotted shirt for my little girl. Cute, cute, cute : )

Baby Sega was a bit older when we finally got pictures done (nearly 3 months). This sweet little Polynesian/Native American boy was so fun to photograph. Even at this age we got him to sleep for us a bit. Look at those darling lips :) I was excited that his parents were wiling to step out of their comfort zone and do some skin pictures together. I think it is so happy and light with the white backdrop - beautiful and timeless.

I have this canvas in my living room of a picture of the Provo temple I took a couple years ago. A client saw it and asked if I'd sell her a copy. It was a while ago and I really hesitated - mainly because I love having an original that no one else has. But I have decided to sell, if anyone is interested. I am selling it only as a canvas gallery wrap - a high quality print. It will come fully prepared for hanging. It would make a wonderful Christmas, anniversary, birthday present for anyone who loves the Provo temple. It is a non traditional shot that I think shows the architectural beauty of the temple. I am parting with it for $200 a print. Currently this is the only temple I have taken a picture of. I hope to do more in the future if I ever find more time to do so.

Having three of one gender and then the opposite seems to be a pattern in families. That's what happened to me : ) I did pictures of these darling girls when the youngest was a newborn and now a couple years later, I was thrilled to meet their little brother, Liam. He was such a good little baby and settled back into sleep so well with each new position. The girls were fun to photography. They simply are gorgeous! Great to see you again, Sage : )

Okay, may the endless feeling of being consumed now come to an end. I have been working the last few weeks with almost every spare moment on the new look of Michele Reyes Photography. New logo, updated website and blog, and new packaging - and my favorite, a new song (I'll get back to that last one in a minute). I am happy with the results. I hope that it all reflects my style a little more and brings everything to a better level : ) I would love to hear what people think. As soon as I figure out my facebook page I will be doing a give-away for a free session! So keep watching the blog :)
Okay, the picture above is my latest mini session with my little girl. Can I just say this little girl has me completely smitten. I can't even begin to express how much I love this little girl. Currently, she is sleeping in a little co-sleeper bassinet right next to me. And every night before I go to sleep, the last thing I do is watch her sleep. She and my other three boys are my world.
Last Fall, soon after I found out I was having a girl, my sister surprised me with a performance of a song by Colbie Caillat called Capri. It was the most beautiful song, and I asked her to record it so I could put it on my website. I had her change the name to Ka'imi for my daughter. It turned out amazing. I seriously cried the first 10 times I heard it. I could listen to it all day long. Head over to my website and just listen to it. I love it. It inspired me to redo the brand for my business, I wanted something just as sweet, amazing, and beautiful.
I am so excited. I feel like I am finally ready to fully give my contribution to the world of photography, all while being inspired by my love for children and motherhood.

New Logo

It is always exciting to get a fresh new look. In starting with a new direction, I thought a lot about where I have come as a photographer and what has become my passion. Without a doubt my favorite subjects to work with are the newborn babies and their mothers. I love the miracle of motherhood. I love doing maternity sessions and taking pictures to show moms that they are so beautiful, belly and all : ) I love seeing tiny little fingers and toes during newborn sessions and creating adorable poses.
When I was designing my logo I had number of them created and showed them to my husband for his opinion. When he saw the flowers I used on this logo, he said it reminded him of a mother and baby. I was sold at that moment. To me there is nothing more beautiful than the mother-child relationship.
With finally having my girl after three boys, I simply had to use pink in my color palette. Thus, this logo came about. I will be updating my blog and website in the next little while. Stay tuned for the changes : )

Spohia is in every way an angel. I did her newborn pictures at 3 months - as soon as she could come to me. This darling spent her first couple months in the hospital. I am so happy her parents can now fully enjoy her. I loved getting to know this sweet family and enjoyed ever minute of the session and editing process. She is so beautiful. Seriously angelic.
